A magnitude 5.6 earthquake occurred at 00:44:03 (UTC) on 17 March 2024, 50.6 km (31.4 mi) NNE of Jiquilillo, Chinandega, Nicaragua; 57.4 km (35.6 mi) ENE of Corinto, Chinandega, Nicaragua and 66 km (41 mi) ENE of El Viejo, Chinandega, Nicaragua. Initial estimates from the United States Geological Survey (USGS) located the epicentre of the event at 12.325°N, 87.683°W, and at a depth of 52.8 km (32.80 mi).
