TA Programme

In 2009, CCRIF SPC, formerly the Caribbean Catastrophe Risk Insurance Facility, launched its Technical Assistance Programme. This Programme consists of four components and is designed to provide support to regional organizations, communities, individuals, and its members in the development and implementation of disaster risk management and climate change adaptation projects and programmes. Under the TA Programme, CCRIF also provides scholarships and internships to Caribbean nationals in areas related to comprehensive disaster risk management (CDRM).

Since the launch of the Technical Assistance Programme in 2010, CCRIF has provided over US$3.5 million to support disaster risk management projects in the region. Additionally, since 2015, CCRIF has placed 198 interns at regional organizations, totalling an investment of over US$500,000 and since 2010, CCRIF has invested approximately US$2 million to provide a total of 190 undergraduate and postgraduate scholarships.

COMPONENT 1: Scholarship/Professional Development Programme

The Scholarship/Professional Development Programmes aim to create a cadre of young professionals who can play a key role in developing future national and regional strategies to increase comprehensive disaster risk management and climate change resilience. In total, CCRIF has two scholarship programmes - one for undergraduate students and one for postgraduate students - as well as a regional internship programme for Caribbean youth.

COMPONENT 3: Support for Local Disaster Risk Reduction Initiatives

The CCRIF Small Grants Programme provides financing for small disaster risk reduction projects in local communities by non-governmental organizations (NGOs), community-based organizations (CBOs), charity organizations, and academic institutions across CCRIF’s Caribbean member countries and/or CARICOM member countries. The programme provides funds of between US$5,000 and US$25,000 per project and projects must be related to disaster risk management, engineering, climate change adaptation, training, and other capacity building initiatives, and environmental management initiatives.

COMPONENT 4: Disaster Risk Reduction in Schools

CCRIF aims to inculcate a culture of resilience and safety in our children. The first activity under this component was the development of the booklet “Hazards, Disasters and Climate Change” for children 8 – 12 years old. The booklet has generated demand in the Caribbean and beyond as a key resource to introduce children between the ages of 8 and 12 to topics related to hazards, disasters, risk reduction, climate change, and how to prepare – before, during, and after – a disaster. In 2023, a French version was created to share with NGOs and government agencies in Haiti.
