Grand Cayman, Cayman Islands, November 17, 2020. CCRIF will make a payout of US$10.7 million to the Government of Nicaragua following the passage of Tropical Cyclone Eta. As is customary and part of the Facility’s customer proposition, all payouts are made within 14 days of the event. Indeed, CCRIF has already paid an advance of US$3.7 million to the Government of Nicaragua, with the remainder to be paid by November 19, following verification of the final model results.

The project consortium learned many lessons along the way, and the CCRIF team is pleased to have been part of the development of this document that captures 20 key lessons we have learned over Phases I and II. These lessons learned will be key in the implementation of Phase III and would allow the project team to build on the best practices from the previous phases as well as focus on taking corrective action in areas that were not as successful, but for which there is now a more in-depth understanding in this relatively new and innovative area of climate risk insurance.

Grand Cayman, Cayman Islands, October 1, 2020. CCRIF SPC has launched its newest parametric insurance product, which has been developed for the electric utility sector in the Caribbean. According to CCRIF CEO, Mr. Isaac Anthony, “The development of this product is part of the scaling-up plans of CCRIF, which has as one area of focus the expansion of the Facility’s product offerings, an example of which is to address the needs of the electric utility sector in the Caribbean”.

Tropical Cyclone Nana was the sixteenth tropical cyclone and the fifth hurricane in the 2020 Atlantic Hurricane Season. On 1 September, it was upgraded from a tropical depression to a tropical storm while it was over the central Caribbean Sea, south of Jamaica. On 3 September, Tropical Storm Nana strengthened, becoming a category 1 hurricane, just before making landfall on the coast of Belize, spreading hurricane-force winds over this country.

The interaction of a tropical wave, a broad area of low pressure and an upper level low pressure area produced periods of showers and thunderstorm activity over the southeastern Caribbean Sea, Trinidad and Tobago and the surrounding areas between August 30 and 31, 2020. Tobago was affected by persistent and intense rainfall between 0800UTC and 1700UTC on 31 August.

The Government of Trinidad and Tobago has two separate Excess Rainfall policies – one for Trinidad and one for Tobago.
